Rezoning for AI Data Center Denied After Major Resident Outcry

Meade County, KY — October 14, 2025
The Meade County Planning and Zoning Commission voted today to deny a proposal that would have rezoned a large section of farmland into light industrial use for an AI data center, following overwhelming opposition from local residents.
Although I was unable to attend the meeting in person due to illness, I watched the proceedings live from home, and what I saw was a clear message from the community — enough is enough.
Dozens of residents filled the meeting room, many speaking passionately about protecting Meade County’s rural identity. Their concerns went far beyond land use. Citizens warned that such a large industrial project would place heavy demand on local water systems and electrical infrastructure, potentially draining resources that rural homes and farms depend on.
Others spoke about the possibility of long-term environmental impact. The overall tone of the meeting was one of unity and determination.
At one point, a resident lightened the mood but summed up the spirit of the evening perfectly when they said:
“If momma’s not happy, nobody’s happy.”
The comment drew laughter and applause, but it also carried a deeper message — the people of Meade County aren’t afraid to speak up when something threatens their way of life.
After more than two hours of public comments and deliberation, the Planning and Zoning Board voted to deny the rezoning request, marking a decisive win for the citizens who showed up and made their voices heard.
From my view watching at home, it was about more than just zoning. This was a stand for community control, local sustainability, and the belief that growth should never come at the expense of essential resources like clean water, stable power, and farmland.
The commission’s recommendation isn’t binding. It’s now passed up to the county’s fiscal court for consideration, which will make the final decision at its meeting at 7 p.m. Today at the Meade County courthouse.
